ACP Cladding vs Natural Stone: Choosing a Facade in Qatar

The facade decides three things at once: how the building is perceived, how much it costs to cool, and how much it costs to maintain. In Qatar all three are tested harder than in most markets.

Here is how aluminium composite panel and natural stone compare on the criteria that actually matter.

Weight, and why it decides more than you expect

This is the difference most clients do not anticipate.

Natural stone is heavy. Stone cladding needs a support system designed for its weight, and on a new building that weight propagates back into the structure — heavier fixings, heavier supporting steel, and in some cases heavier frame and foundations. The facade decision therefore has to be made early, because changing to stone late in design means revisiting the structure.

ACP is light. Aluminium composite panels weigh a fraction of stone. The substructure is lighter, fixing is simpler, and installation is faster. On a refurbishment, this is frequently decisive — an existing building may simply not be able to carry stone, while ACP is well within capacity.

Appearance and design freedom

Stone carries permanence and authority that no manufactured product fully replicates. Natural variation, depth and the way it weathers all contribute. For a building whose identity depends on gravitas — institutional, religious, a palace — stone is difficult to argue against.

ACP offers design freedom stone cannot. Panels can be curved, folded, cut into complex geometry and produced in essentially any colour or finish, including metallics and timber effects. For contemporary commercial architecture with strong lines and large uninterrupted surfaces, ACP is often the more natural fit.

There is no correct answer here. It is an architectural decision, and it should be made on the building's intent rather than on a spreadsheet.

Cost

Stone is the more expensive option in almost every dimension: material, support system, structural allowance, labour, and installation time. Skilled stone installation is slower and requires more experienced trades.

ACP is lower in material cost, lighter, faster to install and cheaper to fix. For large areas the gap is substantial.

That said, comparing headline rates is misleading. Compare installed cost including substructure and structural implications, over the design life you actually expect.

Thermal behaviour

Neither material is an insulator on its own. What matters thermally is the build-up behind the panel: the insulation layer, the cavity, and whether the system is genuinely ventilated.

A properly detailed ventilated rainscreen — either material — allows air movement behind the panel that carries away heat before it reaches the structure. In Qatar's solar conditions that cavity does real work, and it is frequently the element value-engineered out of a facade package. It should not be.

Stone has higher thermal mass, which slows heat transfer through the day. ACP responds faster. In practice the insulation specification behind the panel matters far more than this difference.

Durability in Qatari conditions

Stone is extremely durable and ages well. The vulnerabilities are the fixings — corroding anchors are a real failure mode, particularly near the coast — and the joints, where sealant degrades under UV. Some stones stain or spall if poorly selected for the environment.

ACP is durable when correctly specified. The failure modes are different: the coating degrades under sustained UV if a lower grade is specified, panels can oil-can or distort if thermal movement is not accommodated, and delamination can occur in poor-quality product.

Coating grade is the decision that determines ACP lifespan. This is not a place to accept the cheapest option — the difference in service life is measured in years.

Fire performance

This deserves its own consideration and a direct answer.

Aluminium composite panels consist of two aluminium skins bonded to a core, and the core material determines fire behaviour. Cores range from polyethylene through fire-retardant grades to mineral cores.

Core selection is a life-safety decision, not a cost decision. Specify to the requirement applicable to your building, get the specification documented, and retain the certification. Any facade contractor who is vague about core type on a clad building is not one to appoint.

Natural stone is non-combustible, which removes this consideration entirely — a genuine advantage for certain building types and one worth weighing properly.

Maintenance

Stone needs relatively little routine attention: periodic cleaning, sealant renewal at joints, and inspection of fixings — the last being the item most often neglected and the most consequential.

ACP needs cleaning, joint sealant renewal, and inspection for panel movement or fixing fatigue. Coating fade is the visible ageing mechanism, and panel replacement is straightforward.

Both need scheduled facade inspection, particularly in coastal locations where corrosion of fixings and substructure proceeds invisibly behind the panel. This is part of what our maintenance contracts cover on the towers we look after in West Bay and at The Pearl.

A practical recommendation

Choose ACP for contemporary commercial buildings, large surface areas, complex geometry, refurbishment and recladding, and where programme and budget carry weight — with a properly specified core and a quality coating grade.

Choose stone where permanence is the point, on institutional, religious and prestige residential buildings, where non-combustibility is required, and where the structure was designed to carry it.

Mix them. Many of the best facades use stone at ground level and on principal elevations, where it is seen and touched, with ACP above and on secondary elevations. This is a common and sensible approach, not a compromise.


Frequently asked questions

Can ACP be installed over an existing facade? Often yes, which is why it dominates recladding. The existing structure must be assessed for the substructure loads.

How long does ACP last in Qatar? Coating grade and exposure decide it. Specify properly and ask the supplier for the coating warranty in writing.

Is stone cladding viable on a refurbishment? Sometimes, but weight is the constraint. The existing structure must be assessed before it is considered.
